Linda Franklin and Janet Smith revisited The Good Companions Club in Little Downham, Ely for their November meeting, at which they were presented with a cheque for £200.

Members had made Fenprobe TN their Charity of the Year after Linda and Janet gave a talk to them earlier in the year.  The money was raised from their monthly tombola draw and other contributions. The Fenprobe team enjoyed a lively afternoon with enormous helpings of wonderful cream sponge cake and tea, and enjoyed meeting many of their members.

Fenprobe is very grateful for their commitment in raising this generous sum, which will help us continue our free service to the blind and partially sighted of East Cambridgeshire.

30.06.2014 Joan Saberton Donation Gratefully Received

We have received from the family and friends of Mrs. Joan Saberton, a cheque for £267.00, donated in her memory.  This is a truly wonderful gift from a listener who so enjoyed receiving the Fenprobe news each week that her daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Parsons,  arranged two fishing matches to raise funds for us in her lifetime and now we have this last "thank you" and we are, in return, most grateful.Joan was an amazingly feisty lady. Last year when I met her, she recalled the previous year's Jubilee celebrations.  Her house won the village best decorated Jubilee contest.  Then in her 97th year, she leapt to her feet and holding her still decorated red, white and blue stick aloft, she sang "Here we go, here go, here we go", a wonderful moment which I wished I had captured on film.  She lived a fulfilling life and we know her family and friends will miss her very much.

As a charity, which only exists with the help of grants and listener donations, all our listeners to the news have the opportunity to make sure that other blind and partially sighted people will continue to benefit from the Fenprobe service.  When the time comes, we would so appreciate being remembered in your will.  It would be a lifeline for a lifeline, as Fenprobe is so often described.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Maurice Hobbs, our first President.

A founder member, together with his wife Joyce, Maurice was elected in 1978 to inspire and direct the fledgling committee. In 1981, Maurice was elected Mayor of Ely and made Fenprobe the recipient of that year's Mayor's Fund. This gave Fenprobe finances and public profile a terrific boost and our future was given the security it needed.

Maurice and Joyce were also readers and prolific fund raisers over the years. Our gratitude to them both is immeasurable. Maurice was a fantastic President, always ready with help and guidance.  Unfailingly courteous and very sociable, he worked for Fenprobe until 2001, when his son, Cllr. Richard Hobbs, was elected to carry on what was becoming a family tradition.
Our thoughts are with Richard and Pat and their children and grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will appear in the press and on our weekly recorded news.
